Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for Skin and Hair: What It Is, What the Evidence Says and What to Expect
PRP uses a concentration of platelets prepared from a patient’s own blood. It is being studied for both facial rejuvenation and selected forms of hair loss, but results depend on the diagnosis, technique and individual response.

PRP begins with a small blood draw. The sample is then processed to separate its components and concentrate platelets within a portion of plasma. Because the material comes from the patient’s own blood, PRP is described as an autologous treatment. It is used and studied in a range of medical and aesthetic settings.
What is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Platelets are best known for their role in clotting, but they also contain growth factors and other signaling molecules involved in tissue repair. That biological activity is the reason PRP has attracted interest for skin quality, wound healing, orthopedics and hair restoration.
Facial PRP: what is it used for?
In facial aesthetics, PRP is studied as a way to support skin quality. Recent systematic reviews have reported signals of improvement in texture, wrinkles and patient satisfaction, while also noting that studies use highly variable preparation and application methods. There is still no single standardized “best” protocol.

PRP for hair: can it help hair loss?
Scalp PRP has been studied especially for androgenetic alopecia, also known as male- or female-pattern hair loss. Multiple reviews and meta-analyses have reported increases in hair density in PRP-treated groups, although the size of the benefit and the optimal protocol vary across studies.
That does not mean PRP is appropriate for every type of shedding or thinning. Hair loss can be related to genetics, hormones, nutritional deficiencies, stress, autoimmune disease, medications, inflammation or scarring. Identifying the cause matters before selecting a treatment.
Does PRP regrow hair?
It cannot be promised to regrow hair in every case. The strongest body of evidence is concentrated in selected patients with androgenetic alopecia and viable follicles. Duration of hair loss, age, pattern, underlying cause, technique and concurrent treatment can all affect response.
How many PRP sessions are needed?
There is no universal number. Some published protocols use an initial series followed by maintenance, but frequency depends on the goal, response, preparation method and professional recommendation. A facial plan will not necessarily look like a scalp plan.
When do PRP results appear?
Changes tend to be gradual. For facial treatments, people may look for progressive improvement in texture or overall appearance. Hair growth cycles are slow, so evaluating density takes time. Lack of immediate improvement does not necessarily mean a protocol has failed, but future improvement should never be presented as guaranteed.
Does PRP hurt?
Experience varies with the treatment area, technique and individual sensitivity. The blood draw causes brief discomfort, and scalp or skin applications may produce temporary tenderness or stinging. The clinician should explain what to expect and how comfort is managed.
Aftercare
Instructions depend on the technique. General recommendations may include avoiding unnecessary irritation, following hygiene instructions, using sun protection after facial procedures and contacting the provider if unexpected symptoms occur. The instructions from the professional who performed the procedure take priority.

Is PRP the same as a “vampire facial”?
The marketing term “vampire facial” is often used for facial protocols involving autologous blood components, sometimes combined with microneedling, but it does not describe one standardized medical protocol. Ask exactly what procedure will be performed.
Does PRP work for every type of alopecia?
No. The best-studied evidence is for androgenetic alopecia. Other causes of hair loss require diagnosis and may need different treatment.
Does facial PRP replace other treatments?
Not necessarily. It may be one option within a broader plan depending on the goal, skin characteristics and professional recommendation.
Are PRP results guaranteed?
No. Published studies show variable results and protocols are not fully standardized. Individual response can differ substantially.
